Week #183 – Thursday Quiz @ The Compass (23/04/2026)

The fourth Thursday Pub Quiz at The Compass for Macmillan Cancer Support of April saw 21 teams consisting of an incredible EIGHTY quizzers taking part, including our newest team “Total Eclipse of the Smart”!

Round One – ‘Starter For Ten’ Round

Only “The Wotsits” and “Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot” chose to play their Jokers in round one, but failed to really capitalise.  “Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot” top-scored in the round with 10 points thanks to their Joker, to take the early lead.

Round Two – ‘Word Puzzle’ Round

In The Word Puzzle Round this week the teams had to guess the names of ten UK towns and cities, beginning with the letter ‘D’, where all of the other consonants had been removed.

There were SEVENTEEN Jokers played in this round, and “Caledonian MacBrains”, “One For Yersel'”, “The Bridies”, “The Stoaters” and “Universally Challenged” ALL score a maximum 20 points each with their Jokers, adding 2 Bonus Points apiece to their totals.

In fact, the teams scored a total of 309 points for the round between them (excluding Bonus Points)!

Round Three – ‘Multiple Choice General Knowledge’ Round

Despite there being no Jokers played in round 3 – the ‘Multiple Choice’ round, scoring was still pretty good, with an average score of 7 across all of the teams.

“Caledonian MacBrains”, “The Clan” and “The Stoaters” shared the round on 9 points each.

Round Four – ‘Picture’ Round

The themed for the Picture Round this week was ‘When They Were Young – Celebrity Yearbooks’.

The teams had to correctly guess the ten famous faces from their Yearbook photos.

In this round, “The Bridies”, “We’re Still Thinking” and “Total Eclipse of the Smart” ALL scored 10/10 to earn 2 Bonus Points.  But it was “The Giggle Gang” who won the round with a maximum score of 20 points with their Joker to get 2 Bonus Points as well!

Round Five – ‘Themed’ Round

The Themed Round this week, marked what would have been the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II earlier in the week.

With no Joker cards left, “Agatha Quiz-Tee” top-scored on 9 points.

Round Six – ‘Total Wipeout’ Round

After the break, we headed into the ‘Total Wipeout’ round, where the Snowball Jackpot now stood at the maximum £100!

Clearly a few of our teams fancied gambling to win the bumper prize, but with FOURTEEN of the teams failing to score any points at all, the £100 is donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Snowball Jackpot resets at £10 for the final week of the April Quiz next week!

Round Seven – ‘Guess Who?’ Round

The final ‘Guess Who?’ round this week saw “Universally Challenged” unchallenged as they were the only team to correctly guess Scottish tennis ace Jamie Murray as this weeks mystery celebrity on the first clue.

The £20 cash prize for the round was theirs!

We were left with a tie-break question to separate “The Bridies” and “The Stoaters” for first-place this week, with both teams locked on 75 points.

As normal, the winners would be the team who guessed closest to the correct answer.

Impressively, “The Stoaters” were bang-on with their guess of 120 miles for the length of the Suez Canal, meaning that they won the £25 Greene King Brewery Gift Card this week.

“The Bridies” were runners-up and got a tub of sweeties as reward, with “One For Yersel'” finishing in 3rd place on 72 points.

We look forward to seeing you at The Compass this coming Thursday from 8pm where we will also announce our ‘Team of the Month’ for April!
