The Thursday Pub Quiz at Hugo’s – (24/09/2026)

The final September weekly Thursday Pub Quiz nights at Hugo’s Bar & Pavilion in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support saw an fantastic SIXTY-FIVE quizzers taking part!

This week, we welcomed SEVENTEEN teams to the Quiz, including two new teams – “The Rubber Dinghies” and “Bonnie & Clyde 2.0”.

Our Quizmaster this week was Scott, who will be covering from JOOSE for a few dates in October and November and so was getting another Quiz under his belt this week.

Round One - Starter For Ten

None of the teams played their Joker in the first round this week, and the scoring for ‘Starter for Ten’ was fairly modest, with an average score of 6 points.

Our ‘leading lights’ in this round were “The Wotsits” however, who scored 10/10 to get 2 Bonus Points and take an early lead on the night.

Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Homophones'

Our ‘Word Puzzle Round’ for this week had again been picked by “2 n Coo” last week on the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’.

This week, our teams were given ten ‘homophones’ – words that SOUND the same, but have different meanings and are also spelt differently.

Four of our teams had played their Joker cards and “Dunderheids” and “The Wotsits” were top-scorers on this round, with 14 points apiece.

Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge

There were no Jokers played in Round 3 for the ‘Multiple Choice General Knowledge’ questions.

There were no perfect scores in this round either, so no Bonus Points issued, with the average score again being just over 6 points per team.

Round Four - Picture Round : 'Scottish Singers'

The Picture Round this week saw our teams tasked with naming ten famous Scottish singers.

ELEVEN Jokers were played in this round, hopefully guaranteeing some high scores for our teams.

“Dunderheids” and “The Wotsits” both scored 10/10 to get 2 Bonus Points each.

But “One For Yersel'”, “Quizteama Aguilera”, “Simple Minds”, “The Bridies”, “We’re Still Thinking”, “The Also-Rans” and “The Twits” ALL got every answer correct AND had played their Jokers to get the maximum 22 points each!

Round Five - Music Themed Round : 'September UK Number 1 Hits'

The musical theme continued into round 5, where our teams had to answer questions on ten songs which had been at number 1 in the UK charts in September across the decades.

“The Bridies” got all ten answers correct to bag themselves 2 Bonus Points, but it was newcomers “Bonnie & Clyde 2.0” who were ‘top of the pops’ for this round, scoring the maximum 22 points with their Joker card!

Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £80 Snowball Cash Jackpot

Our updated incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!

PLUS they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!

Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!

This week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at an AMAZING £80 – but with FIFTEEN teams scoring zero points, and no team scoring higher than 4 points, the Jackpot next week will be an INCREDIBLE £90!

Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'

In the final round, EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive 10 Bonus Points towards their total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!

But would any of the teams manage it this week?

In fact, SIX teams correctly guessed that global singing icon Celine Dion was our mystery celebrity on the first clue this week, giving them all twenty points for the week AND ten bonus points for ‘Team of the Month’

“Agatha Quiz-Tee” were drawn out to win the £20 cash prize for the round this week, so congratulations to them!

Tie-Break Time!

Before we announced our winners, we needed to go to a tie-break, to separate “One For Yersel'” and “The Wotsits” who were locked together on 71 points in second place.

Whichever team got the closest answer to the tie-break question would finish in second place, demoting the other team to third spot.

This weeks Tie-Breaker Question was:

Of the 118 officially recognised elements in the Periodic Table of Elements, how many occur naturally on Earth?

“One For Yersel'” opted for ’74’ as their answer, very close to “The Wotsits” who went with ’76’ and were closest to the CORRECT answer of 94 to claim second place outright!

How The Teams Finished...

So “The Bridies” were this weeks winners with a score of 78 points to win this weeks £25 Hugo’s Gift Voucher.

Congratulations to them!

Having finished rock-bottom for the THIRD week in a row, “2 n’ Coo” once again had the dubious honour of spinning the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’ to see what the theme would be for the Word Puzzle Round next week – and this they landed on number 10, meaning that ‘Blockbusters’ (loosely modelled on the popular TV game show) will be the theme for the first Quiz of October!

Team of the Month

10 points are awarded towards your ‘Team of the Month’ score for every week that your team takes part.

In addition, the team with the Highest Average Score in the month gets a further 10 points, with second-highest getting 9 points, and so on.

The same scoring is in place for the Highest Cumulative Monthly Score, the Highest Weekly Score and the Highest Cumulative Bonus Points.

We will also give teams an additional 10 points for each time they get the ‘Guess Who?’ answer correct on the first clue.

Our ‘Team of the Month’ will be the team with the most points after all of this, and wins £50, with second-place getting £25 and third-place receiving £10!

Our top team for September were “The Bridies” with 108 points, earning them £50! Well done to them!

Runners-up “The Wotsits” on 97 points won £25 and third-placed “Quizteam Aquilera” earned £10!
