The Thursday Pub Quiz at Hugo’s – (04/09/2026)

The first of September’s weekly Thursday Pub Quiz nights at Hugo’s Bar & Pavilion in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support saw almost EIGHTY quizzers taking part!

This week saw TWENTY-TWO teams come along to the Quiz, including FIVE new teams – “The Morse Coders”, “Essentially”, “GSM450”, “Quizzee Rascal”, and “Dayrise Devils”.

It was the beginning of our second month at Hugos and thanks to all who have attended so far!

Round One - Starter For Ten

Although none of the teams played their Joker in the first round, the scoring for ‘Starter for Ten’ was still pretty impressive.

Newcomers “The Morse Coders” got off to a perfect start, scoring 10/10 to claim 2 Bonus Points in the very first round, a feat equalled by “Caledonian MacBrains”!

Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Wordsearch' - 'Types of Pasta'

Last weeks bottom team “Dumb & Dumber” had spun the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’ to decide what the Word Puzzle Round would be for this week – and ‘Wordsearch’ came up again!

This week, our teams had to find ten well-known varieties of pasta in the wordsearch grid.

And SEVENTEEN of the teams found all ten, scoring 2 Bonus Points each!

Of those teams, FIFTEEN had played their Joker cards too – giving them the maximum possible 22 points for the round!

“Caledonian MacBrains” and “The Morse Coders” BOTH scored maximum points with their Jokers to shared the lead on 34 points after two rounds!

Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge

The high-scoring continued into round 3, although none of the teams opted to play their Jokers in this round.

Despite there being no perfect scores in this round, EVERY team scored AT LEAST 7/10.

Round Four - Picture Round : 'Best Actor Oscar Winners'

The Picture Round unusually saw only one Joker played this week, as we asked them to name ten actors, all of whom have won Oscars for ‘Best Actor’ during their careers!

NINE of our teams – “Craig & Mike”, “Dunderheids”, “Quizteama Aguilera”, “Quizzee Rascal”, “Simple Minds”, “Tequila Mockingbird”, “The Bridies”, “The Morse Coders” and “The Wotsits” ALL scored 10/10 to get ANOTHER 2 Bonus Points each, but it was the “Busty Crustaceans” who were top of the pile in this round, scoring 18 points with their Joker card!

Round Five - Themed Round : 'Famous Quotes'

“Quizzardry” were the only team with a Joker card left to play for round 5, as we gave our teams 10 famous quotes, and asked them to name the person to whom each of the quotes was attributed.

And with none of the other teams managing to score full marks, “Quizzardry” won the round on 12 points, courtesy of that Joker card.

A packed-out Pavilion at Hugo's for the Quiz!

Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £50 Snowball Cash Jackpot!

Our added incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!

PLUS they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!

Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!

This week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at a fab £50 – but with THIRTEEN teams scoring zero points, and no team scoring higher than “Craig & Mike” on 7 points, the Jackpot next week will be £60!

Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'

In the final round, EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive TEN Bonus Points towards their final total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!

But would any of the teams manage it this week?

In fact, THIRTEEN teams correctly guessed that Irish broadcasting legend Sir Terry Wogan was our mystery celebrity on the first clue this week, giving them all twenty points for the week AND ten bonus points for ‘Team of the Month’

“Dunderheids” were drawn out to win the £20 cash prize for the round so congratulations to them!

Another Tiebreak!

This week, we had to go to a tie-break to separate our three third-place teams, all of whom had finished on 80 points.

“Hoddit & Doddit”, “Tequila Mockingbird” and “The Bridies” all faced the following Tie-Break question…

"According to the UK’s ‘Official Charts’ website, how many weeks (in total) has the original soundtrack for ‘The Sound of Music’ spent in the Top 40 since it was first released in April 1965? "

As always, whichever team gets closest to the correct answer wins the Tie-Break.

“Hoddit & Doddit” and “The Bridies” were both literally HUNDREDS out with their guesses, but “Tequila Mockingbird” had guessed that the answer was 351 – in fact, the correct answer was 346 so they were closest and won a bag of Starburst for their efforts!

Our Runner-Up this week were “Craig & Mike” on 85 points, but it was “The Wotsits” who kept all of the other teams at bay, winning the Quiz this week AND a £25 Gift Voucher for Hugo’s with a score of 86 points!  Well done to them!

Having finished rock-bottom on 45 points, “Drinking Team 2.0” had the dubious honour of spinning the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’ to see what the theme would be for the Word Puzzle Round next week – and Laura landed on number 2, meaning that ‘Dingbats’ will be the theme for the Quiz next week!

We look forward to seeing you at Hugos again this coming Thursday from 8pm in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support for the second our our weekly quizzes for September.

The same scoring is in place for the Highest Cumulative Monthly Score, the Highest Weekly Score and the Highest Cumulative Bonus Points.

We will also give teams an additional 10 points for each time they get the ‘Guess Who?’ answer correct on the first clue.

Our ‘Team of the Month’ will be the team with the most points after all of this, and wins £50, with second-place getting £25 and third-place receiving £10!
