The Thursday Pub Quiz at Hugo’s – (10/09/2026)

The second of our weekly Thursday Pub Quiz nights at Hugo’s Bar & Pavilion for September in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support saw 80 quizzers packed into the pavilion!

This week, we welcomed EIGHTEEN teams to the Quiz, including three new teams – “The Twits”, “Toot Box” and “Menthol Snout”, taking us up to an incredible 436 teams overall!

Round One - Starter For Ten

Although none of the teams played their Joker in the first round, the scoring for ‘Starter for Ten’ was still fairly high.

“Agatha Quiz-Tee” and “The Wotsits” both started off their nights with perfect 10/10 scores to land 2 Bonus Points apiece and share the early lead.

Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Dingbats'

With NINE of the teams opting to play their Jokers in the Word Puzzle Round this week, high scores were welcome for several of our teams – none moreso than “Quizteama Aguilera” who carded a perfect 20/20 with their Jokers to score their first 2 Bonus Points of the evening!

Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge

In round 3, newcomers “Toot Box” opted to play their Joker, and won the ‘General Knowledge’ round with 14 points, just ahead of their chums “Menthol Snout” on 12 points.

Round Four - Picture Round : 'Name the British Cities'

In round 4, the teams had to name ten British cities from the landmarks that they had been given.

Nobody managed a perfect score in this round, and it was “Caledonian MacBrains” who came out on top with 18 points for this round, thanks to their Joker card.

Round Five - Music Round : '80s Hit Lyrics'

The Themed Round this week was a music round, where the teams had 10 sets of well-known lyrics from 1980s chart hits read out to them, and they had to attempt to guess either the song title, or the artist.

This was an incredibly high-scoring round, with TWELVE of the teams scoring full marks to gain 2 Bonus Points – “The Wotsits” and “The Also-Rans” top of the pile with a maximum Joker-assisted score of 20 points each!

Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £60 Snowball Cash Jackpot

Our updated incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!

Plus they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!

Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!

This week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at a sensational £60 – but with FOURTEEN teams scoring zero points, and no team scoring higher than 4 points, the Jackpot next week will be a stunning £70!

Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'

In the final round, EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive 10 Bonus Points towards their total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!

But would any of the teams manage it this week?

In fact, FIVE teams correctly guessed that Scottish Olympic icon Sir Chris Hoy was our mystery celebrity on the first clue this week, giving them all twenty points for the week AND ten bonus points for ‘Team of the Month’

“The Giggle Gang” were drawn out to win the £20 cash prize for the round so congratulations to them!

There wasn’t much of a gap between the teams this week, with just 10 points separating our top 8 teams.

“The Wotsits” were the worthy winners for the second successive week, scoring 77 points, and winning another £25 Hugo’s Gift Voucher.

Our runners-up were “The Bridies” on 75 points, rewarded with a big tub of Celebrations and third-placed “Tequila Mockingbird” (73 points) got their hands on a bag of Starbursts!

How The Teams Finished...

Having finished rock-bottom on 43 points, “2 ‘n’ Coo” had the dubious honour of spinning the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’ to see what the theme would be for the Word Puzzle Round next week – and they landed on number 9, meaning that ‘Inconsonants’ will be the theme for the penultimate Quiz of the month!

Team of the Month

10 points are awarded towards your ‘Team of the Month’ score for every week that your team takes part.

In addition, the team with the Highest Average Score in the month gets a further 10 points, with second-highest getting 9 points, and so on.

The same scoring is in place for the Highest Cumulative Monthly Score, the Highest Weekly Score and the Highest Cumulative Bonus Points.

We will also give teams an additional 10 points for each time they get the ‘Guess Who?’ answer correct on the first clue.

Our ‘Team of the Month’ will be the team with the most points after all of this, and wins £50, with second-place getting £25 and third-place receiving £10!
