The Hallowe’en Thursday Pub Quiz at Hugo’s – (29/10/2026)

The final Thursday Pub Quiz night of October at Hugo’s Bar & Pavilion in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support saw an fantastic FIFTY-FIVE quizzers taking part!

This week, we welcomed SIXTEEN teams to the Quiz, including new team “Paranormal Pepperoni”.

With Bonus Points available throughout the evening, a £20 Snowball Jackpot in Total Wipeout and a £20 cash prize up for grabs in Guess Who?, there was plenty to play for as the teams battled it out over seven rounds.

Round One - Starter For Ten

Our opening round saw the teams looking back at notable events from years gone by.

Scoring was fairly modest across the board, with no team managing to break into double figures. However, “Caledonian MacBrains” and “Universally Challenged” got off to the strongest possible starts, both scoring 7 points to share the early lead.

Close behind were “One For Yersel’”, “Quizzardry” and “Simple Minds”, all of whom scored 6 points.

Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Hallowe'en Dingbats"

This week’s Word Puzzle Round had been chosen via the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’ by last week’s bottom team and featured a suitably spooky collection of Hallowe’en-themed Dingbats.

The round proved popular with our teams and produced some excellent scores, particularly for those who chose to play their Joker cards.

Top scorers were “Quizzardry”, who recorded an impressive 18 points to earn the first 2 Bonus Points of the evening.

Not far behind were “Agatha Quiztee”, “Craig & Mike”, “Quizteama Aguilera” and “The Bridies”, all scoring 16 points, while “Simple Minds” added a very respectable 14 points to their tally.

Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge

The Multiple Choice Round turned out to be one of the tighter rounds of the evening.

No team managed a perfect score, but “Caledonian MacBrains” and “Quizteama Aguilera” topped the standings with 9 out of 10 correct answers.

At the halfway stage there was very little separating the leading teams, and it was still anybody’s Quiz to win.

Round Four - Picture Round : 'Hallowe'en Celebrity Caricatures'

The Picture Round saw some of the highest scores of the night, with several teams making excellent use of their Joker cards.

The standout performances came from “Dunderheids” and “Universally Challenged”, who both achieved the maximum 20 points and earned themselves 2 Bonus Points.

Strong scores were also posted by “Caledonian MacBrains” with 18 points, while “One For Yersel’” and “The Wotsits” both scored an impressive 16 points.

With three rounds remaining, the leaderboard was becoming incredibly congested.

Round Five - Themed Round : 'Hallowe'en'

Round Five proved to be another closely fought contest.

The only perfect score of the round came from “Paranormal Pepperoni”, who scored 10 out of 10 to take the round honours.

Meanwhile, “Agatha Quiztee”, “Caledonian MacBrains” and “Universally Challenged” all scored 9 points to keep themselves firmly in contention near the top of the table.

Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £20 Snowball Cash Jackpot

Our updated incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!

Plus they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!

Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!

This week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at a cool £20, but as (almost) always, “Total Wipeout” lived up to its name.

Five teams failed to score at all, while only one team came close to achieving a maximum score.

That honour belonged to “The Bridies”, who produced an outstanding score of 9 points when many of their rivals struggled dramatically.

Unfortunately for our teams, nobody managed the perfect score required to claim the £20 Snowball Jackpot, meaning the prize rolls over to £30 for next week’s Quiz.

Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'

In the final round, EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive 10 Bonus Points towards their total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!

But would any of the teams manage it this week?

“Simple Minds” were the only team to achieve the maximum 20 points available in the final round, correctly guessing ‘Beetlejuice’ star Michael Keaton as our mystery celebrity, earning themselves another 2 Bonus Points and climbing several places in the standings.

It also meant they got 10 extra Bonus Points towards their final ‘Team of the Month’ score.

However, would it be enough to overhaul the leaders either on the night, or for the month overall?

Michael Keaton

After seven rounds of quizzing, there was absolutely nothing separating “Caledonian MacBrains” and “Universally Challenged”, with both teams finishing on an excellent 74 points.

This meant that a tiebreak question was required to determine this week’s champions.

The deciding question was:

“In what year was the horror classic The Exorcist released?”

“Caledonian MacBrains” answered 1977, whilst “Universally Challenged” opted for 1974.

With the correct answer being 1973, it was “Universally Challenged” who came closest and therefore claimed the victory, along with the £25 Hugo’s Gift Voucher!

How The Teams Finished...

At the other end of the table, “Paranormal Pepperoni” finished on 25 points and therefore had the important responsibility of spinning the Wheel of Misfortune to choose the Word Puzzle Round for next week.  They landed on number 10, and so ‘Blockbusters’ will be the topic next week.

We look forward to seeing you at Hugos again this coming Thursday from 8pm in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support for the first Quiz of November.

Please make sure to book your table by calling Hugos on 01383 270021.

Team of the Month

10 points are awarded towards your ‘Team of the Month’ score for every week that your team takes part.

In addition, the team with the Highest Average Score in the month gets a further 10 points, with second-highest getting 9 points, and so on.

The same scoring is in place for the Highest Cumulative Monthly Score, the Highest Weekly Score and the Highest Cumulative Bonus Points.

We will also give teams an additional 10 points for each time they get the ‘Guess Who?’ answer correct on the first clue.

Our ‘Team of the Month’ will be the team with the most points after all of this, and wins £50, with second-place getting £25 and third-place receiving £10!

“Agatha Quiztee” were crowned October’s “Team of the Month”, winning £50 with a score of 93 points, followed by Dunderheids on 82 points, winning £25.

Third-place “One For Yersel'” very generously donated their £10 prize to Macmillan Cancer Support, so a huge thanks to them!
