The Thursday Pub Quiz at Hugo’s – (27/08/2026)

August’s fourth and final weekly Thursday Pub Quiz nights at Hugo’s Bar & Pavilion in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support saw an fantastic 80 quizzers packed into the pavilion!

This week, we welcomed TWENTY-TWO teams to the Quiz, including THREE new teams – “The Also-Rans”, “The Benchwarmers”, and “Trivia Newton John”.

Who would be our ‘top team’ this week?

Round One - Starter For Ten

Although none of the teams played their Joker in the first round, the scoring for ‘Starter for Ten’ was still fairly high.

“The Clan” and “Boat Quiz McQuizboat” both started off with a perfect 10/10 each, to claim their first 2 Bonus Points of the evening and share the early lead.

Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Anagrams' - "TV Sitcoms"

Our topic for the Word Puzzle Round was ‘Anagrams’, which have been picked out by last week’s last-placed team “The Big Fact Hunt” on the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’.

The anagrams would consist of ten ‘TV Sitcoms’ and this clearly piqued the interest of our teams with ELEVEN teams playing their Joker cards in a bid to maximise their score.

But it all went HORRIBLY wrong from there for our teams!

Only 3 teams – “Craig & Mike”, “Simple Minds” and “Boat Quiz McQuizboat” managed to score double figures (10) and all of them had played their Jokers!

“Trivia Newton John” scored a creditable 8/10.

Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge

Our teams managed to redeem themselves somewhat in round 3, with “Tequila Mockingbird” and “Universally Challenged” BOTH scoring 10/10 to earn another 2 Bonus Points.

However “The Clan” and “Trivia Newton John” had both played their Joker cards and scored 16 points each on the Multiple Choice General Knowledge Questions

Round Four - Picture Round : 'Ten Bobs'

The theme for the Picture Round this week was ‘Ten Bobs’ – ten images of well-known characters and celebrities with the name Bob.

This was a really high-scoring round, with NINE teams scoring 16 points or more and TWELVE teams scoring maximum points!

“Agatha Quiztee”, “Craig & Mike”, “Simple Minds”, “Tequila Mockingbird”, “The Clan” and “The Wotsits” ALL scored 10/10.

“Dunderheids”, “One For Yersel'”, “Team Mac”, “The Bridies”, “Universally Challenged” and “The Also-Rans” had gone even better however, all scoring full marks AND with their Jokers for a maximum 22 points each.

Round Five - Themed Round : 'Everything Starts With An E'

The Themed Round this week saw our teams faced with ten questions where the answers for each began with the letter ‘E’.

This was another very high-scoring round, which saw FOURTEEN of the teams scoring 10/10, each earning 2 Bonus Points for their efforts.

Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £40 Snowball Cash Jackpot

Our updated incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!

Plus they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!

Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!

This week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at a tasty £40 – but with TWELVE of our teams scoring zero points, and only two teams scoring higher than 5 points, the Jackpot next week will be £50!

Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'

In the final round, EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive 10 Bonus Points towards their total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!

But would any of the teams manage it this week?

In fact, THREE teams correctly guessed that British actress Dame Judi Dench was our mystery celebrity on the first clue this week, giving them all twenty points for the week AND ten bonus points towards their ‘Team of the Month’ scores.

“The Bridies” were drawn out to win this weeks £20 cash prize for the round so congratulations to them!

“Craig & Mike” and “Universally Challenged” could take some consolation from getting an extra 10 Bonus Points towards ‘Team of the Month’.

Another exciting Quiz saw “Universally Challenged” come out on top with 82 points to win this weeks £25 Hugo’s Gift Voucher.

“The Clan” were this weeks runners-up on 79 points, getting a nice tub of Quality Street, with “The Bridies” in third place on 78 points winning a bag of Starbursts!

Having finished bottom this week on 45 points, “Dumb & Dumber” had the dubious honour of spinning the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’ to see what the theme would be for the Word Puzzle Round next week – and they landed on number 1, meaning that ‘Wordsearch’ will be the theme for the first Quiz of September!

How The Teams Finished...

Team of the Month

10 points are awarded towards your ‘Team of the Month’ score for every week that your team takes part.

In addition, the team with the Highest Average Score in the month gets a further 10 points, with second-highest getting 9 points, and so on.

The same scoring is in place for the Highest Cumulative Monthly Score, the Highest Weekly Score and the Highest Cumulative Bonus Points.

We will also give teams an additional 10 points for each time they get the ‘Guess Who?’ answer correct on the first clue.

Our ‘Team of the Month’ will be the team with the most points after all of this, and wins £50, with second-place getting £25 and third-place receiving £10!

August’s ‘Team of the Month’ were “The Bridies” with a score of 100 points. Runners-up were “Universally Challenged” on 83 points with “The Clan” in third place on 75 points.
