The Thursday Pub Quiz at Hugo’s – (20/08/2026)

The third of our weekly Thursday Pub Quiz nights at Hugo’s Bar & Pavilion in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support saw an incredible 103 quizzers packed into the pavilion!

This week, we welcomed TWENTY-SIX teams to the Quiz, including SIX new teams – “2 ‘n Coo”, “The Family Affair”, “The Big Fact Hunt”, “United Scottish Association (USA)”, “Smarty Pants” and “The Three Musketeers”.

It was also the 200th Quiz overall, so many thanks to so many of you who have supported the Quiz since it began.

Round One - Starter For Ten

Although none of the teams played their Joker in the first round, the scoring for ‘Starter for Ten’ was still fairly high.

Despite there being no perfect scores to start the night, we saw “Bonnie & Clyde”, “One For Yersel'”, “Quizteam Aguilera” and “The Bridies” start strongest with 9/10 each.

Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Wordsearch'

We didn’t have long to wait to see the first Bonus Points of the evening being awarded!

This week, our teams had to find ten well-known varieties of cheese in the wordsearch grid.  And TWENTY-THREE of the teams found all ten, scoring 2 Bonus Points each!

TWENTY-TWO teams had played their Joker cards too – giving them the maximum possible 22 points for the round!

Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge

The high-scoring continued into round 3, although it was only “Craig & Mike” who scored 10/10 to earn another 2 Bonus Points.

All of our other teams did well, with the majority scoring 7 or more in this round.

Round Four - Picture Round : 'Name the British Politician'

The Picture Round had a bit of a twist this week.  Although the teams had been told early on that the topic was ‘Name The British Politician’, it wasn’t until they turned their clue sheets over that they realised that they only had the eyes of each politician to go on!

Five of our teams rose to the challenge, getting all ten correct to earn 2 more Bonus Points – “Agatha Quiz-Tee”, “Craig & Mike”, “Quizteam Aguilera”, “The Bridies”, and “Universally Challenged” – but our top scorers overall in this round were “Smarty Pants”, who had played their Joker and scored 16 points.

Round Five - Themed Round : '200'

The Themed Round this week was ‘200’ in recognition of us reaching the milestone of our 200th weekly Quiz.

“The Bridies” were the only team to get all ten answers correct, taking their Bonus Points tally for the evening to 6, alongside “Craig & Mike”.

But “The Family Affair” were the top-scorers in this round on 18 points, having played their Joker card.

A packed-out Pavilion at Hugo's for the Quiz!

Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £30 Snowball Cash Jackpot

Our updated incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!

Plus they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!

Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!

This week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at a cool £30 – but with FIFTEEN teams scoring zero points, and no team scoring higher than 5 points, the Jackpot next week will be £40!

Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'

In the final round, EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive 10 Bonus Points towards their total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!

But would any of the teams manage it this week?

In fact, THIRTEEN teams correctly guessed that rock legend Bruce Springsteen was our mystery celebrity on the first clue this week, giving them all twenty points for the week AND ten bonus points for ‘Team of the Month’

“The Wotsits” were drawn out to win the £20 cash prize for the round so congratulations to them!

Another exciting Quiz saw “The Bridies” run out on top with 88 points to win this weeks £25 Hugo’s Gift Voucher.

Our runners-up “Craig & Mike” on 87 points were rewarded with a big tub of Heroes and third-placed “Universally Challenged” (82 points) got their hands on a bag of Starbursts!

Having finished rock-bottom on 56 points, “The Big Fact Hunt” had the dubious honour of spinning the ‘Wheel of Misfortune’ to see what the theme would be for the Word Puzzle Round next week – and they landed on number 3, meaning that ‘Anagrams’ will be the theme for the final Quiz of the month!

A huge thanks to all of the teams who have taken part so far this month – 43 in total!

We hope to see you all back again next Thursday!

How The Teams Finished...

We look forward to seeing you at Hugos again this coming Thursday from 8pm in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support for the final Quiz of August, where we will also announce our ‘Team of the Month’.

Please make sure to book your table by calling Hugos on 01383 270021.

Team of the Month

10 points are awarded towards your ‘Team of the Month’ score for every week that your team takes part.

In addition, the team with the Highest Average Score in the month gets a further 10 points, with second-highest getting 9 points, and so on.

The same scoring is in place for the Highest Cumulative Monthly Score, the Highest Weekly Score and the Highest Cumulative Bonus Points.

We will also give teams an additional 10 points for each time they get the ‘Guess Who?’ answer correct on the first clue.

Our ‘Team of the Month’ will be the team with the most points after all of this, and wins £50, with second-place getting £25 and third-place receiving £10!
