Week #197 – Thursday Quiz @ The Compass (30/07/2026)

The final Thursday Pub Quiz of July at The Compass was also sadly, the last of our weekly Quiz nights to be held here.

And to mark the occasion, we had another fantastic turnout, with TWENTY-ONE teams and 101 quizzers turning out for the final time in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

We welcomed “The Muckin’ Fuppets” and “The Last Place Legends” as our two newest teams.

Who would be our last ever ‘Team of the Week’ and who would be crowned the ‘Team of the Month’ for July?

The Compass, Harbour Drive, Dalgety Bay

Round One - Starter For Ten

Most of our teams made a solid start in Round One.

Only ‘Seal Pointers’ had played their Joker, but “The Clan” were the only team to get full marks in this round, and get 2 Bonus Points for their efforts to take an early lead, just ahead of “Seal Pointers”.

Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Dingbats'

As is often the case, ‘Dingbats’ seems to be a popular feature in the Word Puzzle Round for our teams.

This week, all but one of the teams scored at least 8 points, with SIXTEEN teams playing their Joker cards in this round.

And of those 16 teams, “Bonnie & Clyde”, “Quizteam Aguilera”, “The Bridies”, “The Clan” AND “The Stoaters” ALL got full marks with their Jokers two get 2 Bonus Points as well!

Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge

The General Knowledge Multiple Choice round saw “Dunderheids” and “The Clan” both score a perfect 10/10 – this was the third successive round of full marks for “The Clan” meaning that they had already accumulated 6 Bonus Points for the evening, giving them a healthy lead overall.

Round Four - Picture Round : 'Name the Female Animated Characters'

This week’s Picture Round saw our teams being asked to name ten well-known female characters from animated films and TV series.

“Agatha Quiz-Tee”, “Bonnie & Clyde”, “Quizteam Aguilera”, “The Bridies”, “The Giggle Gang” and newcomers “The Muckin’ Fuppets” ALL scored perfect 10s to earn 2 Bonus Points – but “The Wotsits” had saved their Joker for this round and also got all of the answers correct, to score the maximum 22 points with their 2 Bonus Points added on.

Round Five - Music Round : 'Call Me'

Round Five proved to be a real challenge for our teams this week.

The theme for the Music Round was ‘Call Me’ – ten tracks with ‘Call Me’ featured in the title.

Despite recognising many of the songs, NONE of our teams could name all of the artists.

“My Favourite Team” came closest in this round with 9 points, but there were to be no more Bonus Points awarded this evening.

Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £80 Snowball Cash Jackpot

Our updated incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!

Plus they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!

Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!

And this week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at £80, and despite “Quizteam Aguilera” getting 8/10 (yes, that’s not a typo!), there were no winners tonight.

As this was the final weekly Quiz at The Compass, it was agreed that as there had been no winners this week, that the £80 would instead be donated to Macmillan, something which was warmly received by all in attendance.

Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'

We’ve also ‘upped the ante’ in the final round in recent weeks.

EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive 10 Bonus Points towards their total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!

But would any of our teams manage it this week?

As it turned out, “Agatha Quiz-Tee”, “Dunderheids”, “One For Yersel'”, “Our Drinking Team Has A Quiz Problem”, “Quizteam Aguilera”, “The Giggle Gang” and “Universally Challenged” ALL correctly guessed that broadcaster, TV presenter and journalist Eamonn Holmes was this week’s ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity on the first clue.

Perhaps fittingly, it was The Compass’ staff team “Our Drinking Team Has A Quiz Problem” who were drawn out to win the £20.  In turn, they very generously donated their winnings to Macmillan.

All of the teams who had got the answer correct on the first clue got ten additional points towards their “Team of the Month” total score.

Tie-Break!

Our top seven teams were separated by just ten points this week.

And it required a tie-break question between “The Bridies” and “The Clan”, dead-locked on 80 points each to see who would win the £25 Greene King Brewery Gift Card this week.

“The Clan” were ‘closest to the pin’ with their answer, and so ran out winners of the last ever Thursday Quiz at The Compass by the narrowest of margins.

How The Teams Finished...

Sadly, all good things must eventually come to an end.

On a personal level, I’d like to say a massive “thank you” to Laura and all of the absolutely amazing team at The Compass.

And then of course, thank you to all of you – the 400-plus teams who have made the Quiz the huge success that it is now.  We’ve had an incredible THIRTY-EIGHT teams take part this month alone!

Whether you have only come along once, or whether you are one of our regular teams, your support of the Quiz, and most importantly Macmillan Cancer Support cannot be overstated.  Over the years, we must have raised thousands of pounds for this amazing charity, so thank you for your generosity.

The Quiz will continue, in its new home at Hugo’s Bar and Pavilion in Dalgety Bay from next Thursday, 6th August.  And we will still be raising money for Macmillan.
