Week #196 – Thursday Quiz @ The Compass (23/07/2026)
The penultimate Thursday Pub Quiz of July at The Compass in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support was absolutely PACKED!
This week, we had TWENTY-THREE teams and over ONE HUNDRED quizzers taking part!
We were delighted to welcome new teams “Country Kids”, “The Menstrual Cycle Display Team” and “The Old, Old Wooden Ship”, meaning we have now had 405 teams take part since the Quiz began in October 2022.
Who would be our ‘Team of the Week’, this week?
Round One - Starter For Ten
We started off the evening with three teams achieving perfect scores to earn 2 Bonus Points.
“The Clan” and newbies “Country Kids” both scored 10/10, but it was “Seal Pointers” who raced into an early lead, playing their Joker to maximum effect scoring 22 points.
Round Two - Word Puzzle Round : 'Dingbats'
The Word Puzzle Round this week was ‘Inconsonants’ – ten clues with all of the consonants removed. And the subject matter this week was ‘Famous Authors’
“The Clan” did best here, with their second consecutive perfect score, and this time WITH their Joker to given them 20 points PLUS their third and fourth Bonus Points already, just two rounds in!
Round Three - Multiple Choice General Knowledge
The perfect scoring continued into the General Knowledge Multiple Choice round.
This time, it was “Universally Challenged” who got a ‘perfect 10’ to claim 2 Bonus Points!
Round Four - Picture Round : 'Nations & States Participating in the Commonwealth Games'
With the Commonwealth Games starting in Glasgow on the same day, we tasked our teams with identifying the nation (or state) participating in the Games, from their respective official logo.
None of the teams played their Jokers for this round, and there were no further perfect scores for the remainder of the evening.
Round Five - Music Round : 'Name The Stage Musical or Musical Movie'
Round Five was thoroughly enjoyed by all of our teams – many of them spending more time singing along to the music than writing down the answers!
Our musical tracks this week were all taken from famous stage musicals, or musical movies, and all the teams had to do was to name them.
EIGHTEEN of the teams played their Joker cards in this round, hoping to cash in, but in fact it was only “Charlie’s Angels” who capitalised fully, getting all 10 right to score 22 points and win the round!
Round Six - Total Wipeout Round : £70 Snowball Cash Jackpot
Our updated incentive for ‘Total Wipeout’ means that as well as winning up to £100 in cash, any team who gets 10 answers correct on ‘Total Wipeout’ will now get their Bonus Points for the evening DOUBLED!
Plus they get 10 points towards their score for the evening!
Of course, if they haven’t got any Bonus Points, unfortunately there is nothing to double!
And this week, the Snowball Jackpot stood at a whopping £70 – but with FOURTEEN teams scoring zero points, and no team scoring higher than 6 points, the Jackpot next week will be £80!
Round Seven - 'Guess Who?'
We’ve also ‘upped the ante’ in the final round.
EVERY team who gets the ‘Guess Who?’ mystery celebrity answer correct on the FIRST CLUE will receive 10 Bonus Points towards their total for ‘Team of the Month’ which should make things REALLY interesting at the end of the month!
But would any of the teams manage it this week?
And the answer to that particular question was YES!
“Despair Shop” were the ONLY team to correctly guess that Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle was our mystery celebrity on the first ‘Guess Who?’ clue.
So not only did they pocket the £20, along with the 20 points, but they also got 10 extra points towards their ‘Team of the Month’ score!
The Final Score
“The Clan” were our winners this week, having been in the lead since the second round!
They took home the £25 Greene King Brewery Gift Card.
“Dunderheids” were the runners-up on 77 points, with “Charlie’s Angels” finishing 3rd on 71 points.
